Knoxville Youth Ultimate was started in the Spring of 2010 with 6 teams spread across Knoxville. In the past 7 years the league has grown to 14 teams across 4 counties, includes a single school women’s team, a state champion, and multiple spirit award champions. We have created a 501(c)(3), have represented Knoxville in tournaments from Atlanta to Minneapolis, and have sent multiple players to camps across the country. We have given students an opportunity to grow not only as players, but also as people. With over 20 coaches league wide, our goal is to continue to make the youth ultimate community in Knoxville the best it can be.

Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of ultimate is played by two teams with a flying disc on a field with end zones, similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field.  Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Ultimate is played in more than 80 countries by an estimated 7 million of men and women, girls and boys.

PRESIDENT

How I got into Ultimate?

I learned it was a real sport at the Governor’s a School in 1998. I formed a team at West and played at the Smoky Mountain Ultimate Tourney in 1999.

How I started coaching?

I started captain/coaching the B side of my college team. That year I also helped coach the school’s women’s team, Bowdoin Chaos Theory. Seven years later, the women’s team were D-III national champions.

Favorite throw?

A complete one

Favorite thing about Ultimate?

Making high school kids run.

VICE PRESIDENT

How I got into Ultimate?

God said let there be Ultimate…and I was born!

How I started coaching?

One day I felt the need to yell at people…coaching seemed like the right place to do that.

Favorite throw?

Throws? Please, I use my mind and will the disc to move from me to you!

Favorite thing about Ultimate?

When I see the other side cry tears of fear and shake uncontrollably from having to play me!

Joe Norskov

TREASURER

How I got into Ultimate?

My brother taught me after he, as a first year student, witnessed Colorado Mamabirds in 2003. There’s an inherent beauty watching a disc in flight that captivated me immediately. That and that Beau Jumps Over a Guy video. Have been playing and organizing ultimate ever since.

How I started coaching?

Peer pressure. Why I stayed? Heckling.

Favorite throw?

For me? Thumber. Or no-look scoober. For my players? Any pass that doesn’t hit the dirt. So… not very many.

Favorite thing about Ultimate?

Things: The people. Spirit of the Game. The community. The jargon.

Eric Allen

SECRETARY

How I got into Ultimate?

I got into Ultimate when my son wanted to play.

How I started coaching?

I got into coaching because a bunch of kids wanted to play and didn’t have a coach. I had no idea what or how to run a practice, or much less play the game, but after time, I have learned enough to call me “coach.”

Favorite throw?

The Hammer!

Favorite thing about Ultimate?

My favorite thing about Ultimate is how the players are responsible for making their own calls on the field. The concept of resolving calls by players is a great way for them to practice conflict resolution.

How I got into Ultimate?

Getting a late start to anything is not always ideal, so picking up Ultimate as a sport in my mid 20’s wasn’t the ideal situation, but one day I got invited to play a pickup game and instantly got hooked! Signed up for summer league after that…the rest is history!

How I started coaching?

The best way to get good/better at anything is to learn how to teach it to someone else. One day I reached out and asked if I could watch a HS practice and slowly progressed to coaching. Best decision ever!

Favorite throw?

It’s a toss up between FLICK & HAMMER!

Favorite thing about Ultimate?

Definitely the community! I’ve never been part of a group of guys/girls/players/coaches that have been so welcoming to me! The fact that the Ultimate Community truly welcomes everybody is mind boggling, whether you’re athletic or not, skilled or not, fast learner or not, they welcome you with open arms and truly are with you every step of the way. I love this community!!
